I See You Have A Plan Said Prometheus To The Independent WoMan

If you have sewage service... keep it. It's worth the few bucks a year! Trust me. Your taxes are about to be your last serious recurring expense 'cause with a Promethean plan you can kiss your utilities good bye.

Prosperity starts with fire. Mythologically, taming the civilizing flame gifted to us at great peril by a titan defying a god. A Promethean is an independent producer who isn't afraid to risk their own neck to be sure. And if there's a price to pay... it gets paid.

Technologies, skills, knowledge? Yes, but more specifically...

Light, heat, mechanics, electricity, botanicals (growing plants and other things possibly if you'd like), and compounding interest with the foresight earned getting them all to work together productively; capitalism. It takes surprisingly little technology, mostly simple engineering.

Did you know you can now buy 1000 watts of solar panels, a 100Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery, and Inverter for the price of a decent gaming computer. The same battery banks you configure for solar are used for steam in the winter when the solar is less effective.

The day will come when those you depend on can't be there and on that day you'll wish you'd at least learned the science of how to replace the means necessary to survive... just to discover those same means quickly help you thrive. Put this primer in your back pocket and pull it out in case of emergency if nothing else. Upon this foundation you can build anything.

The hard part in hindsight is composing the "habits by design or constructive rituals" informed by exploring all the ways in which you can get these ideas to reliably interact. So I've summarized my finding here to save you a ton of time and effort. Of all my experiments at my Verboten Studio these are some of the things that worked really well.

Learn how to burn wood safely and effectively. Bio-fuel is a carbon neutral resource. Collecting downed trees and processing them for mid grade seasoned burn wood helps prevent forest fires and costs almost nothing but time and with practice not even much of that. With some exceptions, this is essentially a storage-free plan relying on constant energy conversion through combustion. Think of the "wood" as your "battery".

Wood Stove

Maintains comfortable habitat temperature and greenhouse all seasons and feeds your water heater as a bonus so long as the tank is above the stove. Carbon neutral source of "cooking" heat and therefore can be used to produce steam by combining a pressurized water flow to heated pressure tank. If you need more water pressure then pre-collect your water source in a larger tank above the injector. Make friends with insulation and sealing techniques. The less work your stove has to put into heating your building the more excess energy you have for other purposes.

An old furnace gas compressor makes a great steam engine chassis in a pinch. Able to take the pressure and the heat. While you'll be running water in reverse direction of its original intent this actually amounts to one water pipe in and five exit pipes for the steam in which spinner rods can attach.
Steam Engine

Having installed some number of pipes to control the flow of steam you connect rods with fan blades in the pipes to the effect of spinning the rods. Control the steam pressure to control the rod speeds. Collect the condensation and redirect to greenhouse. Use steam driven fan to distribute hot air near stove through your building's insulated duct system. Make sure you're distributing the clean air from inside your building not the waste heat going up your exhaust stack. Augment if necessary with electric fans installed deeper in the duct system beyond a practical distance from the steam engine's direct spinners. Electric fans run from your Electromagnetic Generators.

Making Electromagnetic Generators is easy and fun! Test spinner and coils hooked up to a cheap amp meter. Copper wire extracted from old non-functioning furnace blower motors. Several different magnets, most from old speakers, to test different configurations.
Electromagnetic Generators (EGs)

In order to push electrons down a copper wire, generating current we can use with other devices such as additional fans or lights, we need magnets attached to spinning rods. You can get good magnets from old hard drives or speakers. Don't let the name confuse you, you're looking for permanent magnets not electromagnets (which are only magnetic when "plugged in".) We're making electricity using magnets NOT making magnets with electricity, though ironically the process is very similar.

Make sure you have separation between the steam redirect and the copper. Respect the copper. Keep it dry. Spinning rods are useful for all kinds of kinetic applications like directly torquing fans and belts in addition to generating electricity.

For each rod on which we place magnets we slide copper coils around such that magnets cross at 90 degree angles with the copper wire during rotation. For efficiency sake we use coils. The diameter of the circles depend mostly on magnet size. Big magnet means big loop for best results. The amount of loops depends on you staying within the range of the magnetic field so the more powerful the magnets the "thicker" you can wrap the coils and therefore generate larger amounts of current per rotation.

For AC just orient the magnets in alternating North/South position around the rod. Play with it. Wrapping your own coil is a fun way to pass time warming your toes near the wood stove and burning out a few LED's while you experiment with your own EGs is a small price to pay for a lifetime of self-generated, environmentally friendly, essentially free power. Think like Nicola Tesla.

Light Array

Sun + Mirrors + Control Paths + Diffusors = Light in dark places such as a year round greenhouse. Sunlight is the best light. Place several inexpensive mirrors around the perimeter of your building in whichever convenient place you might install a solar panel. Now turn the mirrors toward your "collectors" which redirect the light into your attic where you've installed "reflective" control paths directing light into whichever rooms you need through most of the day. By combining light through diffusors you get a much more consistent illumination while maximizing the available sunlight which changes based on seasons and time of day. Also no more flicker or changing light bulbs... like ever.

Augment your lighting needs, including night time, using the EGs or portable lights with small rechargeable batteries you can charge from your EGs. DO NOT invest in expensive battery banks which will just cost you thousands of dollars and have to be replaced in a few short years. Power your secondary lights with "in light sources" ie. a small rechargeable battery of trivial expense, which lasts months per charge under routine usage. Otherwise wire in EG powered light for special persistent needs. Let the fire do ALL the heavy lifting.

By heating your insulated greenhouse with your stove's "waste" heat you can maintain botanical production all year round at temperatures sufficient for plants (if cold for people). Leveraging your light array with augmentation from the EGs and steam waste for misting/watering or even more heat directly from the stove's main system if necessary. You'll find your balance based on your conditions. There are opportunities with an operation like this for expanding into eggs via a small family of chickens happy to work for feed, warmth, and protection from predators.

Master what I've offered you here and the rest will follow in short order. If you want computers and robots and technology beyond your imagination all I ask is that you build these dreams on a firm foundation. A strong, reliable, centre made of fire, steam, copper, and economic stability. Universal elements which reflect the primitive universe and all she contributes to our ambitions. Own property and cultivate it. Start small and expand as you're able.

Notice the conspicuous absence of large battery banks or computers in this schema. No complicated technology wall full of blinking lights and nonsense. No giant up front cost. No solar panels or windmills. No requirement for "intelligent adaption" or sophisticated electronics. No third party service agreements to keep the system running smooth long term. This is a solution for anyone using basic materials available anywhere in such diverse measure that a deal can be made on virtually every component if you're patient and enterprising.

Imagine the impossible... how much of that impossibility is the bill wrapped around your neck like a yoke? The never ending expense tripping you up every time you get a good idea.

How many more times are you gonna watch something come out of nowhere... and just stand there, helplessly paralyzed, as it claws everything you've worked for away? Petty gods! Cruel and fickle as the market forces they reflect. Train yourself into a Promethean. Take control of your production. Do it today. Do it right now. Form your plan and make Prometheus proud.
